Shannon Gateway
Shannon is the easy way into the west of Ireland: a small airport with direct flights to Boston and New York, a short drive from Lahinch and Doolin. This is the logistics page for the arrival night: where to sleep, where to eat, who drives, which airlines and roads reach the other Ireland gateways, and where to leave a board.
Getting There
Shannon Airport (SNN) sits between Limerick and Ennis in County Clare, the real gateway for the Clare West & Portrush zone and an alternative transatlantic gateway for Kerry South & Tramore and the Northwest (reported). Shannon is not a surf town; it is a small, easy airport with year-round Aer Lingus service to Boston and New York and a US preclearance facility, where most trips pick up a car and drive to the coast.
Ireland sits outside the UK and outside the Schengen zone, with its own 90-day clock; the details by passport are in the Clare West Getting There section.
Getting Out of the Airport
- Car hire: the practical choice. Counters are in the arrivals hall; ask about roof racks and note that most cars in Ireland are manual and drive on the left.
- Airport bus: Bus Éireann and Expressway run to Ennis and Limerick, reported at about EUR 6.80 on the local service and EUR 9.50 on the Expressway, and about 30 minutes to either city. Confirm the timetable, and that the bus takes a board bag, before you rely on it.
- Taxi: taxis queue at the terminal; ask for a larger car for a board bag.
The Airlines and Roads to the Other Gateways
- Airlines at Shannon: Ryanair is reported at about 40 routes in 2026, mostly UK and Europe. Aer Lingus flies Boston and New York JFK, United flies Chicago and New York JFK and Delta flies New York JFK, with US service seasonal (reported).
- Other Irish airports: we found no scheduled flights from Shannon to Kerry, Knock or Donegal. Ryanair flies Dublin to Kerry; see the Dublin Gateway.
- By road: Kerry South (Dingle) is reported at about 2 hours 38 minutes from Shannon, and the Northwest about 2 hours 47 minutes, per those zone pages.
For zone-by-zone logistics, start from the Getting There section of each Ireland page: Clare West, Kerry South, Northwest.

Questions People Actually Ask.
Is Shannon or Dublin the better airport for the Clare West zone?
Shannon. The Clare West page puts Shannon as the real gateway, about 43 minutes’ drive to Lahinch and about an hour to Doolin, with Aer Lingus nonstop to Boston and New York JFK, plus United and Delta seasonal service. Dublin has more routes but is a long drive from the west coast.
Does Shannon have US preclearance?
The Northwest page reports a US Preclearance facility at Shannon, so US immigration is cleared before you fly. Confirm current arrangements with the airport before you rely on it.
Which airlines fly from Shannon?
Ryanair is reported at about 40 routes in 2026, mostly UK and Europe. Aer Lingus is reported flying Boston and New York JFK, United flying Chicago O’Hare and New York JFK, and Delta flying New York JFK, with US schedules seasonal. Schedules change, so confirm the carriers on the airport’s own site.
How do I reach Lahinch and Doolin?
By road: Lahinch is about 43 minutes and Doolin about an hour by car. Buses run from the airport to Ennis and Limerick (reported fares about EUR 6.80 to EUR 9.50), and you would still need a connection to the coast, so most people hire a car.
Can I fly from Shannon to the other zones?
We found no scheduled flights from Shannon to Kerry, Knock or Donegal. Kerry South and the Northwest are about 2 hours 40 minutes by road from Shannon according to those pages; for those zones, see the Dublin Gateway and the zone pages.
