Dublin Gateway
Every Ireland trip can start in Dublin, even though none of the three zone maps shows it: the airport with the widest choice of transatlantic and European flights, a few hours’ drive from the Atlantic coast. This is the logistics page for the arrival night: where to sleep, where to eat, who drives, how the small airlines and roads reach the other gateways, and where to leave a board.
Getting There
Dublin Airport (DUB) is Ireland’s main airport, about 10 km north of the city centre, with the widest choice of transatlantic and European flights in the country (reported; the Kerry South page lists Aer Lingus to New York, Boston, Miami and San Francisco, plus Delta). Dublin is not a surf town; it is the logistics base for the three Ireland zones on this site, none of which has Dublin on its map: Clare West & Portrush, Kerry South & Tramore and Northwest.
Ireland sits outside the UK and outside the Schengen zone, with its own 90-day clock; the details by passport, and the extra UK electronic travel authorisation you need for Portrush in Northern Ireland, are in the Clare West Getting There section and Northwest Getting There section.
Getting Out of the Airport
- Airport coach: Aircoach and Dublin Express run to the city centre, reported at roughly 20 to 40 minutes with online fares from about EUR 6 to EUR 9. One source reports the Airlink 747 as suspended, so check which services are running. Ask the driver whether a board bag goes in the hold.
- Public bus: the cheapest option, reported at about EUR 2 with a Leap Card and 40 to 60 minutes into town; board bags are not realistic here.
- Taxi: reported at roughly EUR 30 to 45 and 20 to 45 minutes; ask for a larger car.
- Prebooked car with driver or rental car: the easiest option with boards, especially if you head straight west. Roads to the coast are two-lane for long stretches, so allow for the drive time and for driving on the left.
- No train or tram: neither serves the airport.
Small Airlines and Roads to the Other Gateways
- Kerry: Ryanair is reported flying Dublin to Kerry Airport (Farranfore) on about 14 weekly departures of roughly 55 minutes in summer 2026, on a commercial basis. Kerry is the closest airport for Dingle and Brandon Bay.
- Knock (Ireland West): Ryanair is reported to account for about 95 percent of Knock’s traffic, with routes to the UK and Europe; we could not confirm a Dublin route. Knock is the closest airport with real scheduled service to Strandhill.
- Donegal: the airport has had little scheduled service, and recent news only mentions plans for a Dublin link; do not plan around it.
- Derry: a Dublin to Derry public-service route has been reported as planned for late 2026; unconfirmed.
- Shannon: reached by road from Dublin rather than by air; see the Shannon Gateway, and the Clare West page for the drive to Lahinch and Doolin.
For zone-by-zone logistics, start from the Getting There section of each Ireland page: Clare West, Kerry South, Northwest.

Getting Out to the Zones
Clare West & Portrush: see Clare West Getting There (Shannon is the closer airport). Kerry South & Tramore: see Kerry South Getting There (about two hours from Dublin to Tramore). Northwest: see Northwest Getting There (about three hours from Dublin to the Bundoran area).
Questions People Actually Ask.
Is Dublin or Shannon the better airport for the Ireland zones?
Shannon is closer to the Clare West zone and has its own US preclearance and Aer Lingus flights, and Kerry Airport is closest to the Kerry South zone. Dublin has the widest choice of transatlantic and European routes, which is why the Kerry South and Northwest pages treat it as the realistic gateway for Tramore and for Bundoran.
How far is Dublin Airport from the city?
About 10 km north of the city centre. Aircoach and Dublin Express buses run into the centre and are reported at roughly 20 to 40 minutes, with online fares from about EUR 6 to EUR 9; one source reports the Airlink 747 as suspended. A taxi is reported at EUR 30 to 45. The airport has no train or tram, so allow for a bus or road transfer.
Can I fly from Dublin to the west of Ireland?
Ryanair is reported flying Dublin to Kerry Airport on about 14 weekly departures of roughly 55 minutes in summer 2026, run on a commercial rather than subsidised basis. We could not confirm a current Dublin schedule to Donegal or Knock, so check each airport’s own timetable. The other west-coast zones are normally reached by road, bus or train.
What does it cost to fly with a board in Ireland?
Ryanair and Aer Lingus both charge a sporting-equipment fee; a 2025 guide reported about EUR 40 each way online for either, higher at the airport. Book the board when you book the flight, not at check-in, and confirm the current fee and limits with the airline.
Where do I stay near the airport?
Several large chain hotels sit at the terminals; the independents on this page are guesthouses and bed and breakfasts a short drive away in Swords, Malahide and Santry. They suit an early flight or a late landing, and most will hold a board bag if you ask.
