Yangyang & Sokcho, Korea's East Coast

This is closer to a genuine surf destination than any other Asia zone on this site. A single Kakao Map radius search of the Jukdo–Ingu–Surfyy strip in Hyeonnam-myeon, Yangyang County, returned 15 distinct surf schools and 15 distinct surf-adjacent cafés — a density no other activity category here comes close to. Wikipedia itself flags Surfyy Beach as a standalone cultural fact about the county. Seoraksan National Park is a genuine, competing draw, though: it's Korea's most-visited national park, and Sokcho, the nearby city most travelers use as a base, markets itself as the Seoraksan gateway first and surf-adjacent second. The honest framing: Yangyang is the surf-culture core, Sokcho is the gateway-and-service base, and most trips weave both into one 2–4 day loop.

Researched

This zone sheet is researched and being verified. Every listing below is a real registered business pulled from Kakao Map (name, address, phone, and Instagram/homepage as listed) or from Wikivoyage/Wikipedia — the ground-truthing pass is underway. Google Maps business data is thin in Korea by law, so Kakao Map was used as the primary source here instead of Google Maps, and vendor links below point to a business's own site or Instagram rather than a constructed map link. Prices, hours and details are strong starting points, not gospel, until this page wears the Ground-Truthed badge.

Straight talk: Some links on this page are affiliate links — if you book through them, Secrets of Surf Travel earns a small commission at no extra cost to you. We only link places and people we’d use ourselves, and coverage is never for sale. Those commissions are what keep this site running and fund the next trip.

Some vacation-rental search links on this page (marked “Search Vrbo rentals,” “Search Booking.com stays,” or “Search Agoda stays”) are affiliate links. Every vendor link below is still a plain courtesy link. As more partnerships come online, more links may earn us a commission; the promise above holds either way.

One trip, two towns, ~15–20km apart. Yangyang County — specifically the Jukdo/Ingu/Surfyy strip in Hyeonnam-myeon — is the surf hub itself: shops, cafés, guesthouses and restaurants cluster overwhelmingly on a handful of short streets (인구중앙길/새나루길/인구항길), genuinely walkable and car-free-able if you base there. Sokcho is the nearby city (pop. ~81,000) most travelers actually sleep and eat bigger meals in, and it has no beaches of its own in the surf-specific sense — it markets itself as the Seoraksan gateway first. Local bus 9/9-1 or a ~₩20,000 taxi connects them in 20–30 minutes. Most trips run 2–4 nights and mix a beach day with a Seoraksan day.

Logistics

Getting There

Neither Yangyang nor Sokcho has its own train station. The nearest rail option is KTX-Eum to Gangneung Station (~2 hours from Seoul Station/Cheongnyangni/Sangbong), then a taxi (~30 min, ~₩50,000) or a local bus (~1.5 hours with a transfer) north to Yangyang — a real option only if Gangneung is already part of the trip, since it adds a transfer rather than saving time against the direct bus.

  • Express/intercity bus from Seoul (the dominant route): Seoul Express Bus Terminal or East Seoul Bus Terminal → Yangyang Bus Terminal or Sokcho Express Bus Terminal. Scheduled time is ~2h10m, but 3–4 hours is realistic with traffic. Buses run roughly every 20–30 minutes, about 06:30–23:00.
  • By car: the Seoul–Yangyang Expressway (opened 2017, cut the drive from ~4 hours to under 2) or the Yeongdong Expressway via Gangneung. This is the route most surfers use to haul boards.
  • Direct bus from Incheon Airport (ICN): a direct ICN → Yangyang → Sokcho intercity bus exists as of 2026, routing T2 → T1 → Gimpo → Yangyang → Sokcho, roughly 4 departures a day from T1 (reported ~07:30, 10:40, 13:40, 15:40), about 3.5 hours total, fare reported around ₩36,400. Verify the current timetable and fare close to travel — this is a newer route and the figures above are not yet primary-sourced.
  • Yangyang International Airport (YNY): exists, has a highway right to it, but all flights have been suspended since 2023 after base carrier Fly Gangwon's bankruptcy. Don't route a trip through it without a live status check. See Practicalities below.

Two booking traps worth knowing before you buy a ticket. Intercity bus apps list both “Yangyang Terminal” (central) and “Ingu” as separate stops on some routes — booking the wrong one costs an extra taxi fare. And Seoul↔Yangyang paper round-trip tickets have been reported to work for the outbound leg only, requiring an in-person exchange at Yangyang Intercity Bus Terminal before the return trip (Wikivoyage, dated 2020 — worth a fresh check, but consistent enough with the pattern to flag here).

Logistics

When to Go & What to Pack — a real winter

This is the single biggest tonal departure from the rest of this site's Asian coverage: wetsuits are mandatory gear for most of the year here, not an afterthought. Figures below come from aggregator sites (seatemperature.org, tideschart.com) rather than a primary KMA marine-data feed — good enough for seasonal planning, worth a spot-check if precision matters to you.

  • Winter (Dec–Feb): water averages ~10.1°C, dropping to a February low around 7.5°C (45.5°F). A 5/4mm hooded suit, booties and gloves are not optional.
  • Spring (Mar–May): water averages ~11.4°C; March is the coldest recorded month at ~6.3°C.
  • Summer (Jun–Aug): water averages ~22.1°C, peaking ~23.8°C (74.8°F) in August — boardshorts/spring-suit territory.
  • Autumn (Sep–Nov): water averages ~19°C. Locally regarded (per a marketing/SEO source, so treat as directional) as the “golden season” as Japan-origin typhoon swell arrives.
  • Annual average: ~15.1°C (59.2°F). Swimming/warm-water season runs roughly July through October, when water stays above 20°C.

Air climate (Sokcho, KMA 1991–2020 normals): January mean daily low −3.8°C, record low −16.4°C; August mean daily high 27.5°C, record high 38.7°C. A genuine four-season climate, unlike this site's tropical-Asia zones.

Packing: a full wetsuit that scales from 2mm in summer to 5/4mm-plus-hood in winter, booties and gloves for anything November–April, and standard sun protection for summer. The rashguard-only packing list that works for most of this site's other Asia zones does not apply here for 7+ months of the year. Typhoon season runs roughly August–October and is worth a standalone check of regional typhoon tracking before an autumn trip.

Good to Know

  • Visas: no visa required for US citizens for stays up to 90 days; K-ETA is currently waived for US citizens through December 31, 2026 (scheduled to lapse January 1, 2027 — re-check if traveling after that). In its place, complete the free online e-Arrival Card within 72 hours of arrival.
  • Money: Korea is extremely card- and app-payment friendly — most surf shops, cafés and restaurants take foreign credit cards. A minority of small beachside stalls and umbrella rentals may prefer cash or bank transfer — carry some just in case.
  • Alcohol: no significant restrictions — a genuine contrast against this site's more conservative Asia zones.
  • Connectivity: excellent mobile coverage nationwide. A T-money card is worth having for local buses between Sokcho and the beaches. Google Maps walking/transit directions are unreliable in Korea — KakaoMap is what locals and informed travelers actually use.
  • Instagram, not phone or Naver, is how many independent surf shops are actually reached. Several listed below give Instagram as their only “website” on Kakao Map — reflecting how this scene communicates.

Water-safety rules, Coast-Guard enforced, worth knowing before you paddle out. There is a sunset curfew — it is illegal to be in the water after dark, monitored by coastal guard posts and whistles. Leashes are mandatory, not optional. In July/August, swimmers and surfers are strictly zone-separated by buoys, and surfing inside the designated swim zone is prohibited.

Health: two confirmed 24-hour ERs in Sokcho — see Practicalities & Medical below.

Surf Schools & Board Rental — the Jukdo–Ingu–Surfyy strip

Sixteen registered surf schools and shops on a handful of short streets in Hyeonnam-myeon — genuinely walkable, and the density that makes this zone's “closer to a real surf destination” claim credible. Pricing below is directional, sourced mostly from a single marketing blog rather than primary listings, so confirm rates with the shop directly. All names below are as registered on Kakao Map.

Local Secrets

Nine things about this coast that change how your trip actually runs — a 2017 expressway that built a whole youth-culture town, and the app that actually works here.

  1. This is fundamentally a Seoul weekend-getaway market The 2017 Seoul–Yangyang Expressway

Cutting drive time from ~4 hours to under 2, this specific piece of infrastructure is what triggered Yangyang's transformation from farming county to youth-culture surf hub — not a gradual shift, a single traceable event.

  2. Weekend price spikes are real and steep Summer weekends near Jukdo Beach

Pensions near Jukdo Beach reportedly jump as much as 200% on summer weekends (per a marketing-blog source, unverified against primary pricing but consistent with the “book 3+ weeks ahead in July/Aug” pattern across multiple sources).

  3. Bus ticket terminal mismatch trap Booking apps list both stops separately

Intercity bus apps list both “Yangyang Terminal” (central) and “Ingu” as separate stops on some routes — booking the wrong one costs an extra taxi fare.

  4. Round-trip bus tickets can be single-leg only Confirm at Yangyang Intercity Bus Terminal

Seoul↔Yangyang paper tickets have been reported to work for the outbound leg only, requiring an in-person exchange before the return trip (Wikivoyage, dated 2020 — worth a fresh check before you rely on it).

  5. Yangyang's “airport” is a trap for planners, not a resource No scheduled flights since 2023

It exists, is signed, and shows up in searches, but has had no scheduled flights since Fly Gangwon's 2023 bankruptcy — don't route anyone through it without a live status check.

  6. No train station in either town Gangneung KTX adds a transfer, not time saved

The nearest rail option, Gangneung KTX, actually adds a transfer rather than saving time versus the direct bus — which is why the bus dominates.

  7. The Jukdo strip is genuinely walkable and car-free-able 인구중앙길 / 새나루길 / 인구항길

Surf shop, café, guesthouse and restaurant addresses cluster overwhelmingly on a handful of short streets — a no-rental-car trip is realistic if you base in Ingu/Jukdo itself, versus Sokcho, which requires the bus or taxi commute.

  8. Local bus 9/9-1 is the specific connector Sokcho ↔ the Yangyang beaches

Worth naming directly rather than “take a local bus” — this is the one that actually runs the route.

  9. Instagram, not Naver or phone, is how many shops are actually reached Nalu Surf, Eastside Surf, JJ Surf, Joa Surf and others

Several shops on this bench list Instagram as their only “website” on Kakao Map — reflecting how this scene actually communicates. Message before you show up.

Logistics FAQ

Questions people actually ask.

How far is Yangyang from Sokcho?

About 15–20km, roughly 20–30 minutes by local bus 9/9-1 or taxi (~₩20,000). Yangyang is the surf-strip county; Sokcho is the nearby city most travelers use as a base for bigger hotels, more restaurant variety and better transport links. Neither town has its own train station.

Do I need a visa to visit as a US citizen in 2026?

No visa required for stays up to 90 days. K-ETA is currently waived for US citizens through December 31, 2026 (scheduled to lapse January 1, 2027). Complete the free online e-Arrival Card within 72 hours of arrival instead, and re-verify against Korea's official site before booking.

Is there a direct way to get from Incheon Airport to the surf beaches?

Yes — a direct ICN→Yangyang→Sokcho intercity bus exists as of 2026, roughly 3.5 hours, several daily departures from Terminal 1. Confirm the current timetable close to your travel date, since this is a newer route.

Do I need a wetsuit in Korea?

For most of the year, yes. Water temperature ranges from a February average near 7.5°C to an August average near 24°C — full winter suit (5/4mm plus hood, booties, gloves) roughly November–April, spring suit or boardshorts comfortable July–September.

Is Yangyang International Airport usable for travel?

No — flights have been suspended since 2023 following the base carrier's bankruptcy. Don't plan around it without checking current status; arrive via Seoul instead.

Is Yangyang only for surfers?

No — Seoraksan National Park (hiking, cable car to Gwongeumseong Fortress) and Naksansa Temple are major non-surf draws, particularly for travelers pairing a mountain day with a beach day, and Sokcho markets itself primarily as the Seoraksan gateway.

Disclosure & how this page works.

Straight talk: Some links on this page are affiliate links — if you book through them, Secrets of Surf Travel earns a small commission at no extra cost to you. We only link places and people we’d use ourselves, and coverage is never for sale. Those commissions are what keep this site running and fund the next trip.

Today, the “Search Vrbo rentals” and “Search Booking.com stays” links on this page are affiliate links — every vendor listing link is still a plain courtesy link. As partnerships with these local businesses come online, more links may earn us a commission, and this page will keep saying so plainly. Coverage is never for sale: nobody on this page paid to be here, and nobody can.

Where this page is deliberately hedged. Four vendor names surfaced by a single marketing/SEO source (Singlefin Aleworks, Cheongcho Soo Mulhoe, Manseok Dakgangjeong, Solty Cabin) could not be independently confirmed on Kakao Map this research pass and are deliberately left off this page rather than published unverified. Bus schedules, the ICN direct-bus timetable and most pricing figures came from a mix of Wikivoyage (some dated 2020) and one marketing blog — treat them as directional and re-verify close to travel. Water-temperature figures came from aggregator sites without a cited primary KMA methodology. Naver Map/Naver Blog were not directly searched this session (the platform blocked automated access); Kakao Map served as the substitute per this site's own research method, and it worked well, but a second Naver-based pass could surface additional Sokcho-proper vendors this page doesn't yet have.

Every listing was researched in 2026 and is being verified in person. Where a business's web presence was thin — Instagram-only, or Kakao Map listing only with no phone or site — we said so plainly rather than passing it off as more established than it is. And per the No-Reveal Code: you will find no surf spots on this page, ever. Towns and hubs by name is where it stops.
