Seoul Gateway
A Yangyang and Sokcho trip starts in Seoul, even though the zone map does not show it: the only local airport has had no flights since 2023, so the road from Incheon is the route. This is the logistics page for the arrival night: where to sleep, where to eat, who drives, how the buses and the car reach the coast, and where to find a board shop.
Getting There
Incheon International Airport (ICN) is the gateway for the Yangyang & Sokcho zone, about 50 km west of central Seoul and roughly three to four hours from the east-coast surf strip (reported). Yangyang International Airport (YNY) sits beside the zone but has had no flights since 2023, after its base carrier went bankrupt (reported on the zone page); plan on arriving through Seoul.
South Korea has a short visa-free stay for many passports, and a Korea Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA) has applied to some visa-exempt nationalities, with exemptions that have changed; check the current rule for your passport before you fly. Details are in the Yangyang & Sokcho Getting There section.
Getting Out of the Airport
- Airport Railroad (AREX): trains run from Incheon Airport to Seoul Station in roughly an hour (reported); confirm the express and all-stop timetable.
- Direct bus to the coast: an ICN → Yangyang → Sokcho intercity bus was reported in 2026, about 3.5 hours with a fare near ₩36,400 and four daily departures from Terminal 1. The zone page flags this as newer and not yet primary-sourced, so confirm it before you plan around it.
- Airport limousine bus and taxis: buses and taxis serve central Seoul and the two main terminals; ask for a van if you carry a board bag.
- Rental car or campervan: the route most surfers use to haul boards (reported). Drive on the right; an international driving permit is required for most foreign licences, so check.
Other Ways to Reach the Coast
- Intercity bus from Seoul: Seoul Express Bus Terminal or Dong Seoul Terminal to Yangyang Bus Terminal or Sokcho Express Bus Terminal. The scheduled time is about 2 hours 10 minutes; 3 to 4 hours is realistic in traffic (reported). Buses run roughly every 20 to 30 minutes between 06:30 and 23:00.
- Train: neither Yangyang nor Sokcho has a station. KTX-Eum reaches Gangneung Station in about 2 hours, then a taxi or local bus runs north (reported); useful only if Gangneung is already on the trip.
- Domestic flights: Yangyang International Airport has had no flights since 2023, and a 2025 report floated a possible restart (reported). We found no scheduled service, so confirm before you route a trip through it.
- Booking traps: intercity bus apps list both Yangyang Terminal and Ingu as separate stops, and a paper round-trip ticket can cover only the outbound leg (reported, 2020); confirm at the terminal.

Questions People Actually Ask.
Which airport do I fly into for Yangyang and Sokcho?
Incheon International (ICN), then onward by bus or car. Yangyang International Airport has had no flights since 2023, so do not plan around it without a live status check.
How long is the trip from Incheon to the surf beaches?
Roughly three to four hours in total by the direct airport bus, or about two to three hours by car without traffic, per the zone page. The bus is reported, not primary-sourced, so confirm the timetable.
Is there a train to Yangyang or Sokcho?
No. The nearest rail option is KTX-Eum to Gangneung, then a taxi or local bus north.
Can I bring a surfboard on the intercity bus?
We could not confirm a board policy; ask the operator before you buy a ticket and consider a van or a rental car.
Where should I stay on the first night?
Near the airport in Unseo for an early flight, or in Seoul if you want a night in the city before the coast.
