Getting There

No direct US flight exists. The realistic routing connects through São Paulo-Guarulhos (GRU) — American or LATAM fly nonstop from Miami (~8h25m), then a short domestic hop to Florianópolis's Hercílio Luz International Airport (FLN). Realistic total transit time from Miami runs roughly 12.5-15 hours including the connection. FLN itself is a genuine regional hub (14th-busiest airport in Brazil) with direct domestic service to Rio, Brasília, Porto Alegre, Curitiba, and more — a well-connected airport, just not a top-tier international gateway on its own.

Documents — a real, recent change worth flagging prominently: Brazil reinstated a visa requirement for US citizens effective April 10, 2025, ending the visa-free era that had been in place for years. Older trip-planning content that says "Brazil is visa-free for Americans" is now out of date. Apply online for an e-Visa at the official portal, brazil.vfsevisa.com (VFS Global-operated — the only legitimate channel, watch for scam third-party sites) — roughly $81, most approvals in 48-72 hours but allow up to 10 business days, so apply 2-3 weeks ahead. Once approved, it's valid 10 years, multiple entry, capped at 90 days per visit and 180 days in any 12-month period. You'll need a passport photo scan, ICAO-compliant photo, travel itinerary, and proof of accommodation.

Ground Transport

• Airport to Garopaba or Praia do Rosa: roughly 1-2 hours by car (50-56 miles/80-90km), heading south on BR-101, Brazil's main coastal highway — well-paved and generally well-maintained, tolled in sections.
• Car rental is the practical choice — major agencies (Localiza, Movida, Unidas, Europcar) all operate directly out of FLN, about 6km from the city center. A local operator, Ao Sul Natural Turismo, also serves the Garopaba/Praia do Rosa/Imbituba stretch directly with airport transfers and rentals (roughly R$220-290/day depending on season).
• Intercity bus is a real, workable budget option but adds real time — Florianópolis to Garopaba runs about 3 hours, to Praia do Rosa about 4, via the city bus terminal rather than a direct airport route. Brazil's intercity bus network is generally reliable even on this specific slower connection.

When to Go & What to Pack

• Best surf window is April-October — this is a cold-front, South Atlantic groundswell region, not a tropical trade-swell zone like northern Brazil. Most consistent June-August.
• Water is colder than "Brazil" makes you expect — roughly 16-22°C (61-72°F) depending on season, 16-18°C at the winter low. A spring suit works April-June; a 3/2mm or 4/3mm full wetsuit is genuinely worth having July-October.
• Don't confuse surf season with beach-weather season — November-March is the warmest, most pleasant swimming weather, but it's also the off-season for consistent, powerful swell. Plan around which one you actually came for.

Good to Know

• The advisory: Brazil overall sits at US State Department Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution. Santa Catarina, and Florianópolis specifically, is consistently characterized as one of Brazil's safer, more developed states — the real, practical risk in the surf towns is petty theft and scams at crowded tourist beaches (Praia Mole, Joaquina, Lagoa da Conceição), not violent crime, so long as you use normal precautions.
• Rip currents are a real, sourced hazard on the exposed south/east-facing beaches favored by surfers — genuinely dangerous for casual swimmers even on days that look calm.
• Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for Santa Catarina per current CDC guidance — worth knowing since many travelers assume this only applies to Amazonian Brazil.
• Currency: Brazilian Real (R$/BRL), running roughly R$5.05-5.14 per USD as of this writing — check current rates before you travel. Emergency numbers: Police 190, Ambulance/SAMU 192, Fire 193.
• Connectivity is genuinely strong — solid 4G/LTE along the popular beaches, airport Wi-Fi, and easy eSIM options (Claro-based). Santa Catarina also scores as one of Brazil's higher-English-proficiency regions, a real plus for nervous first-time visitors.

Florianópolis

The island's east/south side — Barra da Lagoa, Lagoa da Conceição, Campeche — where a real tech-hub energy meets Azorean folklore and a genuine board-shaping culture, unusual for a zone this size.

Garopaba

A genuinely mellow, small-town surf destination roughly 90km south of Floripa — "Capital do Surf e Terra das Baleias" (Surf Capital and Land of the Whales) by local branding, home to two of the region's longest-running surf schools.

Praia do Rosa & Imbituba

The most upscale of the three hubs, and Brazil's official "National Capital of the Southern Right Whale" — real stays from budget through genuine luxury, anchored by a credible, science-backed whale-conservation program.

Local Secrets

Nine non-surf reasons this zone rewards the curious — sand dunes born from a flat-day boredom experiment, 5,000-year-old petroglyphs, one of the South Atlantic's most important whale nurseries, and Azorean heritage woven through every hub.

1. Dunas da Lagoa da Conceição Afternoon for fewer crowds

   Massive sandboarding dunes beside Lagoa da Conceição, with panoramic ocean and lagoon views — sandboarding was reportedly invented right here in 1986 by surfers looking for something to do on a flat day.

2. Fortaleza de São José da Ponta Grossa Daily, 8:30am-6:30pm

   An 1740s Portuguese colonial fort restored and run by the local federal university — the only one of the island's forts with a chapel, and home to a working bobbin-lace atelier where artisans demonstrate the craft.

3. Southern Right Whale Watching Roughly July-November, peak September-October

   Southern right whales migrate from Antarctica to calve in these shallow, protected waters — one of the world's most important nursery grounds for the species, with land/headland viewing that's free and genuinely effective.

4. Ilha do Campeche Book ahead — capped at 800 visitors/day

   A protected island just off Floripa's southeast coast with 150+ petroglyphs across 10 archaeological sites, roughly 5,000 years old — became a formal federal Conservation Unit in September 2025. Boat-only access, roughly 5 minutes from Praia do Campeche.

5. Lagoa do Peri Any time — part of a UNESCO Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve

   The largest freshwater lagoon on Floripa Island, a protected municipal park with remaining primary Atlantic Forest, waterfalls, colonial-era mills, and an otter breeding/education center (Projeto Lontra) open to visitors.

6. Renda de Bilro (Azorean Bobbin Lace) Best seen at the Fortaleza atelier or Ribeirão da Ilha/Santo Antônio villages

   A tradition brought by roughly 6,000 Azorean Portuguese immigrants who settled this coast between 1748-1756 — Florianópolis has southern Brazil's largest concentration of lacemakers, part of what earned the island its "Magic Island" nickname.

   A historic Azorean village founded in 1751 — cobblestone streets, the 1757 Church of Nossa Senhora das Necessidades, and a real bayfront restaurant strip built around watching the sun go down.

8. Farol de Imbituba Also a whale-watching vantage point in season

   Historic lighthouse ruins on a coastal bluff with an easy-to-moderate trail giving panoramic views of the ocean, nearby islands, and Imbituba's working port.

9. Garopaba's Historic Center & Fishing Culture Mullet season, roughly May-July, for community net fishing

   Founded in 1793 as a whaling station and shaped by Azorean immigrants who brought artisanal mullet-fishing traditions still practiced today — during mullet season, Praia Central becomes a working stage for cooperative net fishing.
