Secrets of Surf Travel — The World. The Waves. The Adventure.

Port Moresby Gateway

A Papua New Guinea trip starts in Port Moresby, even though the zone map does not show it: there is no direct US flight, and a Port Moresby overnight is likely before the domestic leg to Vanimo, Wewak or Kavieng. This is the logistics page for the connection: where to sleep, where to eat, who drives, which flights reach the hubs, and what to confirm before you go.

Researched

This gateway page is a first, light version. Every listing is a real local business found on paper and not yet verified in person; prices, hours and details are strong starting points, not gospel.

Logistics

Getting There

Jacksons International Airport (POM) is the gateway for the Papua New Guinea zone. There is no direct US service: the realistic route is a US gateway to Brisbane, Cairns or Nadi, then Air Niugini into Port Moresby, then a separate domestic leg to Vanimo, Kavieng or Wewak. Budget two to three days each way, including a likely Port Moresby overnight (reported on the zone page).

US and EU travellers need a visa: apply for the tourist e-Visa in advance (a visa on arrival has been reintroduced for some travellers; do not rely on it). Since 1 October 2025 every arrival submits the free Digital Arrival Card within 72 hours before landing. Passports need six months' validity, and immigration may ask for an onward ticket and proof of funds (reported on the zone page). Details are in the Papua New Guinea Getting There section.

Logistics

Getting Out of the Airport

  • Pre-arranged pickup: arrange a lodge or driver pickup before you land and keep to secure transport (reported advisory).
  • Hire car with a driver: the practical way around the city; ask the operator.
  • Public transport: the city's public minibuses are not recommended for visitors with luggage (reported).
  • Domestic connection: the domestic terminal is a separate leg for Vanimo, Kavieng or Wewak; allow a long connection.
Logistics

Domestic Flights to the Hubs

  • Air Niugini: carries about 72 percent of PNG international capacity (reported on the zone page), connecting Brisbane, Cairns and Nadi to Port Moresby.
  • Domestic carriers: flights from Port Moresby reach Vanimo, Kavieng and Wewak's Boram Airport; PNG's domestic network is inconsistent, with routes suspended or reduced on short notice (reported on the zone page). We could not confirm which carrier flies each route today, so check each leg with the airline.
  • Flex days: build slack at both ends of the trip rather than a tight connection.

For the full route notes, see the Papua New Guinea Getting There section.
