Perth Gateway
The South West starts at Perth Airport, even though the zone map does not show it: the only serious long-haul gateway, and a three-hour drive from the first hubs. This is the logistics page for the arrival night: where to sleep, where to eat, who drives, how the road south works, and where to find a board shop.
Getting There
Perth Airport (PER) is the real long-haul gateway for the Margaret River & South West zone, about 20 km east of the city; the zone page says there is no serious alternative. Perth is not a surf town; it is the logistics base where most trips pick up a car for the roughly three-hour drive south.
Standard Australian entry rules apply, with an ETA or eVisitor for most nationalities; check requirements for your passport. The zone page covers the details: Margaret River Getting There.
Getting Out of the Airport
- Airport train: the Airport Line reaches the city in about 15 to 20 minutes, reported at roughly A$4 to 5 one way, from about 6 am to midnight; check late-night frequency and whether a board bag is allowed in the carriage.
- Bus: public buses serve the airport (reported routes 380 and 40), at 30 to 50 minutes; not suited to boards.
- Taxi or rideshare: a taxi is reported at about A$45 plus a A$4 airport fee and 20 to 25 minutes; ask for a maxi taxi for a board bag.
- Rental car or campervan: the practical option. Driving is on the left, and the zone page recommends hiring from Perth.
Roads and Small Airports to the South West
- By road: about 274 km, a straightforward three hours via the South Western Highway, or longer by the scenic Caves Road, per the zone page.
- Busselton Margaret River Airport (BQB): a small regional airport with limited scheduled service; once the airport wait and the transfer into town are counted, the zone page says it rarely beats the drive.
- Coach: we have not confirmed current coach operators or timetables from Perth to Margaret River; check before you plan around one.
