Padang Gateway
Every Mentawai trip starts here, and so does the West Sumatra hub: Padang is the port city on the Sumatran mainland where the charter boats and ferries load. This is the logistics page for the buffer night: where to sleep, where to eat, who drives, how the ferries and the small planes work, and how to reach the islands.
Getting There
Minangkabau International (PDG) is West Sumatra’s main airport, about 23 km north of central Padang, with domestic flights from Jakarta and Bali and an international route from Kuala Lumpur (reported). Padang is not a surf town; it is the logistics base where the Mentawai charters and ferries start and where the West Sumatra hub of the Sumatra page begins.
Entry rules are Indonesia’s national rules: complete the All Indonesia arrival card before you fly and arrange an e-VOA if you need one (details in the Bali & Lombok Getting There section). Bali’s tourist levy applies only on Bali, not in West Sumatra.
Getting Out of the Airport
- Airport train: a limited-stop train runs from the airport to Padang station (Simpang Haru), reported at about 40 minutes and around IDR 10,000, with few departures a day. Check the timetable, and ask whether a board bag can ride in the carriage.
- Taxi or ride-hailing: reported at 35 to 60 minutes and IDR 120,000 to 250,000 into the city.
- DAMRI airport bus: the low-fare option, route dependent; not suited to a board bag.
- Prebooked car with driver: the easiest option with boards, especially for a transfer straight to Bungus where many charters load. Tell the operator about the board bag.
The Boats and Small Planes to the Mentawai Islands
- Mentawai Fast Ferry has its Padang office at Batang Arau harbour. Guides report departures on set weekdays, about three to four hours, around IDR 300,000 for foreign visitors, and cancellations in poor weather. Timetables found online disagree, so confirm with the office the day before.
- The slow ferry runs from Teluk Bayur, reported at 10 to 12 hours on older ships.
- Live-aboard charters and land-based resorts stage from Padang and Bungus port. Book through an agency and vet the specific boat and crew yourself.
- Small planes: Rokot airstrip on Sipora is the only airstrip in the archipelago and takes only small aircraft. We could not confirm a regular scheduled operator, so ask your resort or charter.
For Sumatra’s other hubs, the domestic airlines that fly there (Wings Air, Lion Air, Citilink and others) mostly route through Medan or Jakarta; see Sumatra Getting There.

Questions People Actually Ask.
Do I need to spend a night in Padang?
Most people should. Live-aboard charters and the ferries load from the Padang area, so we recommend a buffer night rather than flying in and loading a boat the same day.
How far is the airport from the city?
About 23 km north of central Padang. The airport train to Padang station is reported at about 40 minutes and around IDR 10,000, a taxi or ride-hailing is reported at 35 to 60 minutes and IDR 120,000 to 250,000, and the DAMRI bus is the low-fare alternative. Train frequency is limited.
Are there flights to the Mentawai Islands?
The archipelago has one small airstrip, Rokot on Sipora, which takes only small aircraft. The Mentawai page says there is no scheduled commercial flight network, and we could not confirm a regular operator, so ask your resort or charter whether a flight is possible. Most visitors take a boat.
When does the Mentawai fast ferry run?
Guides report it running on set weekdays, roughly three to four hours, for about IDR 300,000 for foreign visitors, but the timetables found online disagree and trips are cancelled in poor weather. Confirm with the ferry office the day before. A slow ferry from Teluk Bayur takes 10 to 12 hours.
