Getting There
No direct US flights. The realistic routing connects through a hub: TAP Air Portugal flies nonstop Lisbon–Maputo, or Qatar Airways runs nonstop Doha–Maputo. For this specific zone, though, flying into Johannesburg is often the more practical path — it's well-served from the US, sits close to the whole southern Mozambique coast, and Airlink and LAM both run frequent direct Johannesburg–Maputo flights (about an hour).
This zone genuinely splits into two different access patterns — worth understanding before booking anything. Ponta do Ouro is essentially a South Africa road-trip destination: about 5-6 hours' drive from Durban to the Kosi Bay border (open 8am-5pm daily, not 24 hours), then a short 4x4 hop into town. Tofo and Barra are a different story — much further north near Inhambane, where the Maputo-to-Tofo drive runs a genuine 7.5-8+ hours. Flying Maputo to Inhambane on LAM (about an hour) is the realistic option most travelers should plan on instead.
Documents: apply for an e-visa online in advance, valid up to 30 days — visa-on-arrival may still be possible at some entry points as a backup, but the e-visa is the more reliable path. A yellow fever certificate isn't required just for arriving from the US; it only applies if you're arriving from or transiting more than 12 hours through a country on Mozambique's yellow-fever-risk list.
Ground Transport
- To Ponta do Ouro: the paved road corridor from Maputo down to the Kosi Bay border area is complete these days, so 4x4 isn't required for that stretch — but the final 6-8km from the border post into Ponta do Ouro town reverts to deep soft sand, genuinely 4x4-only. Most visitors park a 2WD rental at the border and swap to a transfer vehicle (around R200/person return) rather than trying to push a sedan through.
- To Tofo/Barra: fly Maputo–Inhambane on LAM (~1 hour), then it's a short 30-45 minute transfer from Inhambane Airport to Tofo. The full overland drive from Maputo (~490km, 7.5-8+ hours via the N1) is possible but a genuine full-day commitment.
- No standard car-rental agency operates inside Ponta do Ouro itself — rentals are arranged in major towns beforehand, or through a local buggy/quad operator once you're in town. Tofo has more established local rental options, including a couple offering unlimited mileage within Inhambane Province.
When to Go & What to Pack
- No wetsuit needed most of the year. Water runs warm, roughly 22-28°C — boardshorts cover most months, with a 3/2mm or spring suit useful during the cooler stretch (June-August) for longer sessions.
- A real trade-off worth knowing: peak surf season (May-October, best in June-August, driven by South Indian Ocean groundswell) runs opposite peak whale shark season at Tofo (October-March). There's no single month that maximizes both — decide which draw matters more for your trip.
- Manta rays are visible at Tofo's cleaning stations year-round, and humpback whales pass through roughly June-September (also relevant at Ponta do Ouro, where the window runs closer to July-November).
Good to Know
- The advisory: Mozambique overall sits at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution. There is a much more serious warning for Cabo Delgado province, in the far north, tied to an active regional insurgency — that's geographically distant, hundreds of kilometers from Tofo, Barra, and Ponta do Ouro, and has no bearing on the southern coast covered here. Worth stating plainly so the two don't get conflated.
- Malaria is a genuine, meaningful risk in this specific zone — both Inhambane and Maputo provinces have historically significant transmission. Prophylaxis should be treated as standard here, not an afterthought.
- Currency: Mozambican Metical (MZN/MT).
- Emergency response in remote coastal towns (Tofo, Ponta do Ouro) is genuinely limited — dive operators typically carry their own emergency/oxygen protocols, and travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is the practical safety net rather than relying on local emergency services alone.

Branded the "Whale Shark Capital of Africa" — this hub's tourism economy runs overwhelmingly on diving and marine-life encounters, not surfing. The surf scene here is real but secondary; the surf schools function as the closest thing to guided access.

A well-known South African weekend and holiday destination, right on the border — its entire character is shaped by proximity to Durban and Johannesburg, distinct from Tofo's international backpacker-trail feel. Known for diving with wild dolphins, bull sharks, and hammerheads.
