A Liberia trip starts at Roberts Airport, outside Monrovia, even though the zone map does not show it: the nearest surf town, Robertsport, is a 3 to 4 hour overland trip on a road that turns to laterite. Getting There
Roberts International Airport (ROB) is the gateway for the Liberia zone. There are no direct US flights: the realistic route is US to Brussels, then Brussels Airlines nonstop into Monrovia, about 6.5 hours in the air and roughly four to five flights a week. This route has been suspended in the past over airport navigation-equipment issues and resumed after repairs, so check the current schedule before you book (reported on the zone page).
US and most EU travellers must get a visa from a Liberian embassy before travel; the online visa on arrival is only for travellers whose country has no Liberian embassy. For US citizens, the Washington embassy issues a 3-year multiple-entry visa for 180 dollars with about 12 working days of regular processing; confirm the current fee. Getting Out of the Airport
- Pre-booked pickup: arrange a lodge or driver pickup before you land and confirm the fare.
- Private car and driver to Robertsport: roughly 100 to 150 dollars one way, arranged in Monrovia or through your lodge (reported on the zone page).
- Shared taxi: a shared taxi from Monrovia's Duala Market is about 15 dollars per person, shared with up to five others, but slower (reported).
- No shuttle or bus network: getting to Robertsport is DIY overland travel (reported).
Other Ways to Reach the Coast
- Monrovia to Robertsport: roughly 110 to 120 km, but budget 3 to 4 hours or more; the road is paved out of Monrovia and turns to unpaved laterite for the final stretch, slick and rutted in the rainy season (reported on the zone page).
- Flights: Brussels Airlines is the only nonstop named on the zone page. We found no scheduled flight to Robertsport itself.
