Medan Gateway
Every northern Sumatra trip starts here: Medan’s Kualanamu airport is where the small planes to Nias and Simeulue leave and where the long road to the Banyak Islands begins. This is the logistics page for the buffer night: where to sleep, where to eat, who drives, and how the small airlines and boats reach the other hubs.
Getting There
Kualanamu International (KNO) is the gateway to northern Sumatra, about 40 km south-east of central Medan, with domestic flights from Jakarta and across Indonesia and regional routes from neighbouring countries (reported). Medan is not a surf town; it is the logistics base where the small planes and long road legs to the Aceh, Simeulue, Banyak Islands and Nias hubs on the Sumatra page begin.
Entry rules are Indonesia’s national rules: complete the All Indonesia arrival card before you fly and arrange an e-VOA if you need one (details in the Bali & Lombok Getting There section). Bali’s tourist levy applies only on Bali, not in North Sumatra. Aceh is a dry province under Sharia law; do not pack alcohol for the Aceh hubs.
Getting Out of the Airport
- Airport train: a rail link runs from the airport to Medan station, reported at about 30 to 45 minutes and around IDR 100,000 one way; one source gives IDR 70,000 and frequency is limited off-peak, so check the timetable. Ask whether a board bag can ride in the carriage.
- Taxi or ride-hailing: the flexible option with boards; confirm the fare and the vehicle size before you get in.
- Prebooked car with driver: the easiest option for a transfer straight to a connecting flight or to Sibolga for the Nias ferry. Tell the operator about the board bag.
- Airport hotels: several hotels sit within a few minutes of the terminal, useful when the Simeulue or Nias flight leaves early.
The Small Airlines and Boats to the Other Hubs
- Nias & Hinako: Wings Air is reported flying Kualanamu to Binaka Airport (GNS) near Gunungsitoli in about an hour, several times a day. Citilink has served the route; check whether it is running. The sea alternative is the ferry from Sibolga.
- Simeulue: Wings Air and Lion Air are reported flying Medan to Sinabang on a Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday schedule; an older source also lists Susi Air. Flights are small and morning departures are common, so plan a night in Medan. Confirm days directly before booking.
- Aceh: Banda Aceh (BTJ) has domestic connections from Medan; the Sumatra page covers the Lhoknga drive and the Banda Aceh ferry to the outer islands.
- Banyak Islands: no airstrip. The reported route is a long road leg from Medan to Singkil (about 8 to 12 hours by bus depending on the source), then a public ferry to Pulau Balai (3 to 5 hours) or a faster chartered boat (1 to 2 hours). Weather can stop the boats; confirm departures at the Singkil harbour.
For the West Sumatra hub and the Mentawai Islands, use the Padang Gateway instead.

Questions People Actually Ask.
Which airport do I fly into for northern Sumatra?
Kualanamu International (KNO) near Medan. It is the gateway for the Aceh, Simeulue, Banyak Islands and Nias hubs on the Sumatra page. Padang is the gateway for West Sumatra and the Mentawai Islands instead.
How far is the airport from Medan?
About 40 km south-east of central Medan. The airport train to Medan station is reported at about 30 to 45 minutes and around IDR 100,000 one way, though one source says IDR 70,000 and frequency varies, so check the operator’s current timetable. A taxi or ride-hailing car is the alternative; ask whether it takes a board bag.
Can I fly straight to Nias?
Yes. Wings Air is reported flying Kualanamu to Binaka Airport (GNS) near Gunungsitoli in about an hour, with several departures a day; Citilink has served the route and may or may not be running, so check. From Gunungsitoli it is an overland run to the southern hub.
How do I reach the Banyak Islands?
There is no airstrip and no flight. The usual route is a long road leg from Medan to Singkil, then a public ferry or a faster chartered boat to Pulau Balai, with times that vary by source and weather. Resorts and charter operators arrange the boat; see the Sumatra page for the dedicated charter boats.
How do I reach Simeulue?
Wings Air and Lion Air are reported flying Medan to Sinabang on a set Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday schedule; flights are small, so a night in Medan before an early departure is common. Confirm the days before you book because regional schedules shift.
