Malé Gateway
Every Maldives surf trip lands at Velana airport on its own island beside Malé, and from there the atolls run hundreds of miles south. This is the logistics page for the first and last night: where to sleep, where to eat, who runs the speedboats, how the public ferry works, and the small airlines and seaplanes that reach the other atolls.
Getting There
Velana International Airport (MLE) sits on Hulhulé, its own island, beside the capital Malé. Hulhumalé, a planned island joined to the airport by a causeway, holds most of the newer guesthouses. Malé itself is a short airport-ferry ride across the channel. Seaplanes and domestic flights leave from terminals on the airport island.
Reported entry rules (visa-agency pages, not the Maldives government): US citizens receive a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival. Expect to show a return or onward ticket, a confirmed booking at a registered tourist facility, and funds, and to submit the online traveller declaration before you fly. Passport validity is reported anywhere from one to six months. Check the official immigration declaration site and the US State Department’s Maldives page before you go, and confirm whether any local-island transfer needs permission.
Getting Out of the Airport
- To Hulhumalé: by road across the causeway, a few minutes by taxi or shuttle.
- To Malé city: the airport ferry runs to the Malé waterfront for a small fare (reported at around US$0.60), then a short taxi to most guesthouses.
- To a local island by speedboat: your guesthouse can arrange it, or use a ticket desk beside the airport or in Malé. Tell the operator about the board bag and confirm the price and the boat size in advance.
- To a local island by public ferry: the ferry terminal is in Malé city, not at the airport, so you need the airport ferry and a short taxi first. Ferries run on set days and not on Fridays on many routes, schedules found online disagree, and fares vary, so confirm in person or with your guesthouse the day before. The official operator is MTCC.
The Small Airlines to the Other Atolls
- Maldivian is the national domestic airline, flying propeller aircraft from the airport to airports across the atolls.
- Manta Air flies ATR 72-600 aircraft and lists Dhaalu (DDD) and Dharavandhoo (DRV) among its domestic destinations; it began daily flights between Malé and Gan in Addu City in 2022 (reported, so check its current schedule).
- Villa Air (FlyMe) uses Villa International Airport at Maamigili as its main base (reported).
- Trans Maldivian Airways runs the seaplane fleet from a base beside the airport, mostly to resorts. Seaplanes are reported to allow around 20 kg checked and 5 kg cabin baggage.
Baggage allowances on the propeller aircraft are small (reported at around 22 kg checked), excess baggage is sold in advance, and some carriers have no online check-in. We found no published surfboard rule, so ask the airline directly about a board bag before you book, and see Manta Air and Maldivian’s own site for current routes.

Questions People Actually Ask.
Do I need a visa for the Maldives?
Most US travelers get a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival, but you need an onward ticket, a confirmed booking at a registered facility, and the online traveller declaration. Reported by visa-agency sites, so check the official immigration site before you fly.
How do I get from the airport to a local island?
Either a speedboat, which a guesthouse or a ticket desk beside the airport can arrange, or the public ferry, which leaves from the terminal in Malé city rather than from the airport. Public ferries run on set days, and schedules found online disagree, so confirm in person or with your guesthouse.
Are there flights to the other atolls?
Yes. Maldivian, the national domestic airline, and Manta Air fly propeller aircraft to airports across the atolls, and seaplanes run mainly to resorts. Baggage allowances are small, so ask the airline about a board bag before you build a trip around it.
Can I store a board in Malé?
We found no board-specific storage near the airport. Ask your guesthouse first; many will hold a board bag.
