Secrets of Surf Travel — The World. The Waves. The Adventure.

Lisbon Gateway

Most Portugal trips start in Lisbon, even though none of the zone maps shows it: the airport with the widest choice of transatlantic flights, an easy drive from the Silver Coast and a longer one from the Algarve. This is the logistics page for the arrival night: where to sleep, where to eat, who drives, how the trains and buses reach the other gateways, and where to leave a board.

Researched

This gateway page is a first, light version. Every listing is a real local business found on paper and not yet verified in person; prices, hours and details are strong starting points, not gospel.

Logistics

Getting There

Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) is Portugal’s main airport, about 7 km from central Lisbon, with nonstop US service by TAP Air Portugal from eight US cities as of 2026 (reported on the Silver Coast page). It is the gateway for the Silver Coast and the recommended gateway for the Algarve; North Portugal pairs with Porto instead. Lisbon is not where you surf from; it is the logistics base where most trips pick up a car or a bus and head to the coast.

Portugal is in the Schengen area: no visa for 90 days within any 180 for US, UK, Canadian and EU passport holders, and the pending ETIAS authorisation is covered in the Silver Coast Visa & Documents section.

Logistics

Getting Out of the Airport

  • Metro: the red line leaves from the airport station, reported at about 20 to 25 minutes to the centre and EUR 1.90 for a single ticket in 2026, running from about 06:30 to 01:00. Board bags are awkward in rush hour.
  • Taxi or ride-hail: reported at about EUR 10 to 18 and 15 to 30 minutes; ask for a larger car for a board bag.
  • City buses: several Carris lines serve the airport, reported at about EUR 2.30 on board; not suited to boards.
  • Prebooked transfer or rental car: the easy option with boards, especially for a straight run to Ericeira, Peniche or Nazaré. Rental offices are a short shuttle from the terminal.
  • No airport shuttle bus: the Aerobus is reported as discontinued.
Logistics

Trains, Buses and Flights to the Other Gateways

  • Algarve (Faro): the Lisbon to Faro train is reported at about three hours on the fastest Alfa Pendular, with fares from about EUR 8 to 29 depending on how early you book; seats are assigned, so reserve ahead. The Algarve line ends at Lagos. Check cp.pt for current timetables.
  • Silver Coast: Rede Expressos buses run from Sete Rios to Nazaré and Peniche, reported roughly hourly at about 1 hour 50 minutes; there is no rail to those towns.
  • Porto: trains and flights connect Lisbon with Porto; see the North Portugal page for what to do once you arrive.
  • Small planes: we found no small-aircraft airlines worth planning around for the Portugal zones. We have not confirmed the current domestic flights; trains and cars are the practical options.

Logistics FAQ

Questions People Actually Ask.

Is Lisbon the gateway for all three Portugal zones?

It is the gateway for the Silver Coast and the recommended one for the Algarve, per those zone pages. North Portugal normally pairs with Porto instead; see the North Portugal page.

How far is the airport from the city?

About 7 km from the centre, with a direct red-line metro link reported at about 20 to 25 minutes and EUR 1.90 for a single ticket in 2026. The Aerobus is reported discontinued; taxis and ride-hailing are reported at EUR 10 to 18. A board bag on the metro is possible but awkward at busy hours.

How do I get from Lisbon to the Silver Coast?

Per the Silver Coast page, Ericeira is roughly 30 to 60 minutes by car, Peniche about an hour and Nazaré roughly 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 45 minutes. A Rede Expressos bus runs from Sete Rios to Nazaré and Peniche, reported hourly, but there is no direct rail to those towns. A rental car is the practical option with boards.

How do I get from Lisbon to the Algarve?

Per the Algarve page, about a three-hour drive to Lagos, or a direct Rede Expressos coach of about 3.5 hours. The train from Lisbon to Faro takes about three hours and the Algarve line ends at Lagos, with no rail to Sagres or Aljezur.

Can I fly from Lisbon to Faro or Porto?

Faro and Porto both have their own airports, and TAP and low-cost carriers reportedly serve them from Lisbon, but we have not confirmed current operators or frequencies. Trains and cars are the usual way and carry a board far more easily than a short domestic flight.
