Līhuʻe Gateway
Both Kauaʻi zones start at Līhuʻe, even though the zone maps do not show it: the airport is the only way in, and the two sides of the island are joined only through it. This is the logistics page for it: where to sleep, where to eat, who drives, how to get a car, and where to find a surf shop.
Getting There
Līhuʻe Airport (LIH) is the only way into Kauaʻi for the Kauaʻi North and Kauaʻi South and West zones, with no direct flight to a North Shore airfield (reported on the zone pages). To Poʻipū it is roughly 13 to 16 miles and 25 to 30 minutes. To Princeville and Hanalei it is roughly 30 to 40 miles up the coast on Kūhiō Highway, a two-lane road with no alternative, and the Hanalei Bridge is a one-lane choke point with a recurring flooding history, with documented closures in November 2020, February 2023, July 2025 and April 2026. Poʻipū to Princeville is roughly 40 to 43 miles and 1.5 to 2 hours each way, always via Līhuʻe, because the Nā Pali Coast cliffs block a direct route.

Getting Out of the Airport
- Rental car: essential on Kauaʻi; rent before you land and ask about board space.
- Taxi or private ride: taxis meet flights; the zone page lists private rides and shuttles to the North Shore (reported).
- Hanalei Bridge: check hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/kauai for current status before you drive north, and budget flexibility into any North Shore day (reported on the zone page).
