Kaohsiung Gateway
A Kenting trip starts in Kaohsiung, not Taipei: that is the single most common planning error on the zone page. The airport is a two-hour coach ride from the peninsula, and there is no train. This is the logistics page for the arrival night: where to sleep, where to eat, who drives, how the coach and the road reach the zone, and where to find a board shop.
Getting There
Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH) is the gateway for the Kenting zone, not Taipei: the airport is roughly 110 km north of the peninsula, about two hours by bus or car (reported on the Kenting page). From Taipei the usual route is high-speed rail to Zuoying (about 1.5 to 2 hours), then a coach of about two hours. There is no train to Kenting; the nearest stations are Fangliao and Fangshan, with a bus on from there.
Taiwan grants 90 days visa-free entry to many passports, including the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and EU states, with six months' passport validity and an onward ticket (reported on the Kenting page). Getting Out of the Airport
- Coach to Kenting: coach services run direct from the airport and from Zuoying station (reported on the Kenting page); confirm the current operator, fare and timetable.
- Metro and rail: the Kaohsiung metro links the airport to the city centre and to the main rail station (reported); confirm the line and the board-bag rules.
- Taxi or van: ask for a van or an estate car for a board bag.
- Rental car or scooter: Provincial Highway 26 loops the peninsula and scooter rental is common in Hengchun and along Kenting Street (reported); read the licence warning on the Kenting page first.
Other Ways to Reach the Zone
- From Taipei: high-speed rail to Zuoying in 1.5 to 2 hours, then a coach of about two hours (reported on the Kenting page).
- From Taitung: about 124 km and 2 hours 20 minutes by road over Highway 9 and Provincial Highway 26, or about 2 hours 53 minutes by train and bus via Fangshan (reported). It is a separate leg, not a day trip from the east coast.
- Rail: there is no train to Kenting at all; plan on a bus from Fangliao or Fangshan if you arrive by rail.
- Flights: we found no scheduled flight to the peninsula itself; Kaohsiung is the nearest airport.
