Inverness Gateway
Scotland’s far north starts in Inverness: no direct US flights, but a short flight to the Western Isles and a long drive to Thurso. This is the logistics page for the connecting night: where to sleep, where to eat, who drives, which flights, ferries and roads reach each hub, and where to find a surf shop.
Getting There
Inverness Airport (INV) is the onward airport for the Scotland zone, about 13 km north-east of the city. There is no direct US flight anywhere in the zone; transatlantic arrivals come through Edinburgh or Glasgow, then a domestic leg (reported on the Scotland page). Inverness is not a surf town; it is the logistics base for the drive north to Thurso and for the Loganair flights to the Western Isles.
Scotland is part of the United Kingdom: US citizens get a visa-free six-month stay but need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travel, currently GBP 20, and EU passports need it too. Details are in the Scotland Getting There section.
Getting Out of the Airport
- Bus: services 11, 11A and 11D run to the city, reported every 30 minutes on weekdays and hourly on Saturdays with a limited Sunday service. Ask the driver whether a board bag goes in the hold.
- Taxi: reported at about 15 to 25 minutes to the centre; ask for a larger car for a board bag.
- No train at the terminal: the nearest station is Nairn, reached by taxi.
- Rental car or campervan: the practical option for the north coast and the islands; Thurso is about two hours 18 minutes north by road, per the Scotland page. Drive on the left.
Flights, Ferries and Roads to the Other Hubs
- Isle of Lewis: Loganair flies Inverness to Stornoway, reported at up to four flights a day and about 30 minutes in the air, per the Scotland page.
- Isle of Harris: there is no airport; fly into Stornoway and drive about 43 minutes south, or take the CalMac ferry from Uig on Skye to Tarbert, reported at about 1 hour 40 minutes.
- Lewis by ferry: CalMac sails Ullapool to Stornoway, reported at about 2 hours 40 minutes and often rough; the number of daily sailings varies by season, so check the timetable.
- Thurso: Wick John O’Groats airport has only a single subsidised route to Aberdeen and is not a practical connection; Thurso is a drive north from Inverness.
- Small airlines: Loganair also serves other Scottish island airports from Inverness; we have not confirmed current routes beyond Stornoway.
