Honiara Gateway

A Solomon Islands trip starts in Honiara, even though the zone map does not show it: the airport is on Guadalcanal, about 380 km from Gizo, and the domestic flight to Western Province is the next leg. This is the logistics page for the connection: where to sleep, where to eat, who drives, which flights reach Gizo and Munda, and what to confirm before you go.

Researched

This gateway page is a first, light version. Every listing is a real local business found on paper and not yet verified in person; prices, hours and details are strong starting points, not gospel.

Logistics

Getting There

Honiara International Airport (HIR), on Guadalcanal, is the country's only international gateway for the Solomon Islands zone, about 380 km from Gizo (reported on the zone page). There is no direct US service: the route is LAX to Nadi on Fiji Airways, then Nadi to Honiara, or US to Brisbane and on to Honiara. Expect a genuine multi-day, multi-stop trip.

US citizens do not need a visa in advance: a visitor's permit valid up to three months is issued on arrival, with a passport valid six months beyond the trip, proof of onward travel and proof of funds (reported on the zone page). Rules move, so check the official source. Details are in the Solomon Islands Getting There section.

Logistics

Getting Out of the Airport

  • Taxi: taxis meet flights; agree the fare first and ask about a board bag.
  • Hire car: local hire cars operate in Honiara; the road network on Guadalcanal is limited.
  • Domestic connection: the next leg is Solomon Airlines to Gizo or Munda; confirm the transfer time and board allowance.
  • Luggage: we found no luggage-storage listing; ask your hotel or the airline.
Logistics

Flights to Western Province

  • Solomon Airlines: the only domestic carrier flies Honiara to Gizo (Nusatupe, GZO) and Honiara to Munda (MUA), roughly 1 to 1.5 hours, several times weekly (reported on the zone page).
  • Rendova: there is no airstrip on Rendova; reaching the lodge there means flying into Munda and taking a boat of roughly 30 to 45 minutes (reported on the zone page).
  • Into Honiara: Fiji Airways, Solomon Airlines or Air Niugini fly Nadi to Honiara roughly three times a week; Solomon Airlines or Qantas fly Brisbane to Honiara, close to daily combined (reported on the zone page).
