East London Gateway
The Wild Coast starts at Mthatha or East London, even though the zone map does not show either: both are a long overland leg away. This is the logistics page for the connection: where to sleep, where to eat, who drives, how the flights and roads reach the zone, and where to find a surf shop.
Getting There
Two airports serve the Wild Coast zone. Mthatha Airport (UTT) is the closer gateway, but it has a single route, to Johannesburg on SA Airlink, and a documented history of operational issues, including a 2019 suspension over sub-standard emergency-response systems (reported on the zone page). East London (King Phalo Airport, ELS) is meaningfully better connected, with Airlink and CemAir to Johannesburg, CemAir to Cape Town and FlySafair to Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, at the cost of a longer overland leg; if your dates are flexible, East London's reliability is the safer bet. Budget 24 to 30 or more hours door to door from the US (reported).

Getting Out of the Airport
- Shuttle or cab: shuttles and cabs serve both airports; the last leg is overland on rural roads.
- Rental car: the practical way along the coast; ask about ground clearance and board space.
- Lodge transfer: many lodges arrange pickups from Mthatha or East London; ask when you book.
