Secrets of Surf Travel — The World. The Waves. The Adventure.

Discovery Coast

A thin surf zone, and we say so plainly. Between the Sunshine Coast and the Capricorn Coast, real surf coaching exists at only two places: Agnes Water and 1770 at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef, and Rainbow Beach on the Cooloola coast. K'gari, the world's largest sand island, is here as a place to plan around, not a surf product: its ocean beaches are unpatrolled, with rips and sharks, and suit very experienced surfers only. Hervey Bay is the gateway to the island.

Pick a hub to jump to its section — or scroll, the same content is all below.
Researched

This zone sheet is researched and being verified. Every listing below is a real local business we found and vetted on paper — the ground-truthing pass is underway. Prices, hours, and details are strong starting points, not gospel until this page wears the Ground-Truthed badge.

Straight talk: Some links on this page are affiliate links — if you book through them, Secrets of Surf Travel earns a small commission at no extra cost to you. We only link places and people we'd use ourselves, and coverage is never for sale. Those commissions are what keep this site running and fund the next trip.

Some vacation-rental search links on this page (marked "Search Vrbo rentals," "Search Booking.com stays," or "Search Agoda stays") are affiliate links. Every vendor link below is still a plain courtesy link. As more partnerships come online, more links may earn us a commission; the promise above holds either way.

Real, specific safety context: No part of K'gari's ocean is patrolled, and Queensland Parks advises against swimming in it because of rips and sharks, so treat it as for very experienced surfers only. Beach driving there is tide-timed and dingoes are wild and unpredictable. Agnes Water's main beach is patrolled full-time from September to early May and on weekends outside that; patrol dates for Rainbow Beach are not confirmed. Marine stinger season typically runs November to May, and Queensland's cyclone season runs 1 November to 30 April. Estuarine crocodiles are recorded north from Gladstone, with a confirmed animal in the Mary River and credible reports in the Great Sandy Strait and along K'gari's west coast.

Logistics

Getting There

Agnes Water and 1770. The towns sit at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef, about 90 minutes north of Bundaberg and 90 minutes south of Gladstone. The local tourism body gives Brisbane as 480 km or 5 hours 30 minutes, Bundaberg 122 km or 1 hour 25 minutes, and Gladstone 124 km or 1 hour 30 minutes. The closest airports are Gladstone and Bundaberg, and most flights to both go through Brisbane. The Tilt Train between Brisbane and Cairns stops at Miriam Vale, the closest station, about 40 minutes from Agnes Water.

Rainbow Beach. Self-drive from Brisbane takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. The nearest airports are Sunshine Coast and Hervey Bay, each about 1.5 hours away, and buses run from Brisbane, Gympie and Hervey Bay.

Hervey Bay and K'gari. K'gari is about 300 km north of Brisbane and 15 km off the coast of Hervey Bay and Maryborough. Hervey Bay Airport has car-hire desks (Sixt, Avis, Europcar, Budget, Hertz, Thrifty and Dollar), a 24-hour taxi service, a shuttle bus and Uber. Passenger flights run daily from Hervey Bay to K'gari, with flights also from Maroochydore, and commercial tours leave from Rainbow Beach, the Sunshine Coast, Hervey Bay and Brisbane.

Getting onto K'gari by barge. From Inskip Point to Hook Point (a 15-minute drive from Rainbow Beach) the barge generally runs 6 am to 5.30 pm, takes about 10 minutes, and needs no booking. From River Heads to Kingfisher Bay or Wanggoolba Creek the ferry takes 30 to 50 minutes and bookings are required; one operator lists fares from $135.30 per 4WD vehicle. Vehicle barges also take walk-on passengers.

Documents: check Australian visa requirements for your passport before you travel.

Logistics

Ground Transport

  • A car is the practical choice, and K'gari needs a 4WD. Agnes Water has a local taxi and shuttle service, a Greyhound coach stop, and hire cars from Bundaberg, Gladstone and Rockhampton. Rainbow Beach has buses and fuel in town; a 4WD is needed for beach driving and K'gari, though most of the township and lookouts need none.
  • K'gari roads and vehicles: every road on K'gari is sand. High-clearance 4WD vehicles with low range are essential, all-wheel-drive vehicles are not recommended, caravans are not suitable, and off-road camper trailers must have high clearance.
  • Hire vehicles: special rules apply to hire 4WDs on K'gari: a maximum of 8 seats, forward or rear-facing seats, everything stored inside below the door frame (nothing on the roof), and compliant seatbelts. The hirer must buy the vehicle access permit in their own name.
  • Fuel and supplies: fuel is sold at K'gari Beach Resort, Happy Valley, Cathedrals on Fraser, Orchid Beach and Kingfisher Bay Resort, and the two resort stores sell groceries, ice and camping gear. Mobile reception can be unreliable, so buy camping permits before you arrive.
  • Road rules: all Queensland road rules apply. Limits are 80 km/h on the eastern beach, 30 km/h inland and 40 km/h in beach pedestrian areas. Police patrol the island with random breath and drug testing, and the blood-alcohol limit is 0.05.

When to Go & What to Pack

Book well ahead for holiday periods; the busiest camping ground in Agnes Water has Christmas bookings years in advance. On K'gari, camping bookings open 12 months ahead, and Queensland Parks says at least six weeks ahead is wise for popular spots in school and public holidays.

Long-term averages from the Bureau of Meteorology stations at Bundaberg Aero (the nearest long record to Agnes Water, about 122 km by road) and Hervey Bay Airport (the nearer station for Rainbow Beach and K'gari).

January to March is the wettest stretch and July to September the driest. July is the coolest month, with days of about 22°C and nights of about 10°C. K'gari has wet, humid summers (especially January to March) and drier, milder winters (June to August).

Whales. Hervey Bay operators give the humpback season as roughly July to October, and the Rainbow Beach tourism site lists whales off the coast from June to November.

Cyclones and stingers. Queensland's cyclone season officially runs 1 November to 30 April, and marine stinger season typically runs November to May.

Wongari (dingo) breeding season. Queensland Parks lists the Wongari Rearing and Emergence Season on K'gari as 1 September to 30 November 2026, with extra care needed.

What to pack: for K'gari, a high-clearance 4WD with low range and recovery gear (MAXTRAX and a snatch strap are suggested, with tyre pressure around 18 PSI on sand), a walking stick, sturdy footwear (not thongs), a hat, sun protection, drinking water for walks, and warm clothing for winter nights. Water temperature varies through the year, so check local advice for wetsuit thickness.

Good to Know

K'gari Vehicle Access Permits

A vehicle access permit must be bought before driving on K'gari or in the Cooloola Recreation Area (the Rainbow Beach side), for every registered vehicle. At the time of checking: K'gari is $61.80 for one month or less; a combined K'gari and Cooloola permit is $99.25 for one month or less; and Cooloola alone is $15.40 for a day bought online, $23.30 for a day not bought online, or $39.25 for a week. Permits need not be displayed because number-plate cameras are used, but you must be able to show a copy, and entering without a permit brings a $518 fine. No permit is needed for the Inskip Peninsula or Green Island. Book through the Queensland National Parks Booking Service, a Parks office or 13 QGOV (13 74 68).

K'gari Camping

Camping permits must be bought before you set up camp and cannot be bought from rangers on the island. State camping fees are $7.75 per person or $31.00 per family per night (children under five are free). Bookings open up to 12 months ahead, and a booking number must be displayed at your site. Open fires are banned except in the communal fire rings at Dundubara and Waddy Point; approved gas or manufactured-fuel stoves are allowed.

Tide-Timed Beach Driving

On K'gari the best beach-driving times are two hours either side of low tide. Avoid driving two hours either side of high tide, and avoid travel at night. Driving along the foredunes to dodge high tide is prohibited, because the soft dunes can collapse. When high tides, swell and onshore winds combine, deep salt water can cover the whole beach, and help is hours away. Take care at Eli, Wyuna, Awinya and Coongul creeks, and never attempt Wathumba Creek or the Moon Point estuaries. Aircraft use signposted landing zones on the eastern beach, and vehicles must give way. The Cooloola beaches are also tide-dependent.

Dingoes (Wongari)

K'gari's wongari are wild, unpredictable and protected. Never feed them, stay within arm's reach of children (even small teenagers), walk in groups and carry a stick, do not run, lock up food and rubbish, and never keep food in tents. Queensland Parks recommends families with children aged 14 and under camp in the fenced areas. Feeding dingoes or leaving food unsecured is an offence. If you feel threatened, do not run or wave your arms: call for help, back away calmly, fold your arms, keep eye contact and stand tall. Report close encounters to a ranger or phone (07) 4127 9150.

Ocean Safety on K'gari

There are no patrolled swimming areas on K'gari. Queensland Parks says not to swim in the ocean because it is unpatrolled and there may be rips and sharks, not to dive into water, and to stay away from rocks where surf can wash you away. Dunes and cliffs can collapse without warning. Treat the ocean here as for very experienced surfers only.

Beach Patrols

Agnes Water: lifeguards patrol the main beach full-time from September to early May and on weekends outside that period; take care if swell exceeds 1 m, as rips will be present, particularly at low tide. Rainbow Beach: the surf life saving club fields patrolling volunteers, and the local tourism site advises swimming only at the patrolled area of Main Beach. Rips dominate the central and northern beach, so swim between the flags. Patrol dates are not confirmed here, so check Beachsafe or the club.

Stingers, Crocodiles & Cyclones

Box jellyfish are found in shallow tropical waters north of Agnes Water and Irukandji north of southern K'gari, with stinger season typically November to May; in season, swim only at a patrolled beach. For a sting, pour vinegar over it for at least 30 seconds, pick off tentacles, and call 000 if the person is unwell. Estuarine crocodiles are recorded from Gladstone north; report sightings to 1300 130 372, camp at least 50 m from the water's edge and stand back when fishing. Cyclone season runs 1 November to 30 April.

Closures & Time-Sensitive Notices

As of 27 October 2026 Queensland Parks lists the notices below; check each park's alerts page before you set out.

  • K'gari: several road and track closures (including partial closures on Northern Road, Cornwells Road and Moon Point Road), a closed beach camping zone, infrastructure works at Waddy Point and Central Station, and a Wongari Rearing and Emergence Season from 1 September to 30 November 2026, and booking restrictions at Waddy Beach Front Camping Area to 15 December 2026.
  • Cooloola (Rainbow Beach side): the Cooloola Great Walk is closed from 1 December 2026 to 28 February 2027, water is across the Wilderness Trail to 8 November, sand movement is affecting access to Double Island Point, a fire prohibition applies on Teewah Beach, and the upper Noosa River is closed by flooding to 4 November.
  • Deepwater National Park (near Agnes Water): no park alerts were listed when last reviewed.
  • Whales: at least one Hervey Bay operator is no longer taking 2026 bookings, so check others for remaining dates.
The Code Every Surfer Needs To Know

Respecting the Locals

  • Use the official names. Say K'gari (Fraser Island) or K'gari, not Fraser Island alone, and use the names Queensland Parks uses, such as Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie) and Tukkee Wurroo (Indian Head).
  • Wildlife and heritage: do not feed or disturb wildlife, take your rubbish out, stay out of the restricted areas (no access within 3 m of the Maheno shipwreck, or beyond the markers at Tukkee Wurroo), and take only memories from middens, scarred trees and camp sites.
  • Fire and dunes: bring your own firewood where fires are allowed, obey Total Fire Ban days, and keep off fenced dunes and nesting areas.
  • Spend where it helps. The Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation says it is developing K'gari Cultural Tours, intended to be the only Indigenous-owned tourism business on the island; check its site for when they start.

Whose country this is. K'gari is the traditional home of the Butchulla people, and Queensland Parks describes them as the Traditional Custodians of K'gari. The Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation, which holds their native title rights, publishes no visitor acknowledgement, so we do not offer one of our own. It does publish its Three Laws, in its own words: “What is good for the land comes first”; “Do not take or touch anything that does not belong to you”; and “If you have plenty, you must share.” Queensland Parks publishes the Butchulla welcome on its K'gari signs, written by Uncle Malcolm Burns and translated by Narawi (Joyce Bonner), in English: “Good day. Welcome! Butchulla people, Traditional Custodians of K’gari, welcome you to country. May all our good spirits be around you throughout the day. Wherever you go leave only footprints.” At Rainbow Beach, which Queensland Parks places within Butchulla country (the boundary is described as in contention), the Visit Rainbow Beach site publishes: “In the spirit of reconciliation, the ‘Visit Rainbow Beach’ site acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connection to land, sea and community. We pay our respects to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.” At Agnes Water and 1770, Gladstone Regional Council publishes: “Gladstone Regional Council would like to acknowledge the Bailai, the Gurang, the Gooreng Gooreng and the Taribelang Bunda people who are the traditional custodians of this land. Gladstone Regional Council would also like to pay respect to Elders both past, present and emerging, and extend that respect to other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.”

Agnes Water & 1770

Agnes Water is a small beach village with a main-street strip of cafes, a pub, a few shops and a long patrolled beach; the Town of 1770, about 10 minutes away, sits on Round Hill Creek and the bay with a marina, sunset cruises and reef trips. It is a laid-back, backpacker-and-family surf town at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef, known for learn-to-surf coaching, kayaking, the Lady Musgrave Island day trip and Deepwater National Park. It is the anchor of this zone, and the most complete.

Rainbow Beach

Rainbow Beach is a small coloured-sand village on the Cooloola coast, about 15 minutes from the Inskip Point barge to K'gari. Its local tourism site calls it the gateway to K'gari, with coloured sands, tours, surf beaches and 4WD access. It is a backpacker, 4WD and tour base with one working surf school, so book stays and meals ahead and ask locally for anything not listed here.

Hervey Bay (K'gari Gateway)

Hervey Bay is the usual gateway to K'gari: it has the airport, the River Heads ferry, the whale-watching marina and the 4WD hire depots. K'gari is about 15 km off the coast of Hervey Bay and Maryborough. Hervey Bay itself is sheltered, calm water and not a surf destination, so it is listed for the night before and after the island, and for humpback whale season from about July to October.

The signature list

Local Secrets

Eight real reasons this coast rewards the curious, from the waters of wisdom to a town named for a lost schooner.

  1. Boorangoora, the waters of wisdom Lake McKenzie

Queensland Parks says Boorangoora, also known as Lake McKenzie, was a place for decision-making, where wise ones met to listen for messages on the breezes. Butchulla people camped near fresh water but did not swim in the waterholes, taking care not to dirty their drinking water. Welcome poles by Butchulla artists stand near the disused jetty.

  2. Wuruma and the first school of fish Butchulla knowledge

Queensland Parks recounts the dance of wuruma, the brahminy kite: when djilgar (the black wattle) flowers, the diamond-scale mullet are coming through, and the bird teaches never to hunt the first school, because they are scouts.

  3. The Maheno shipwreck A busy beach landmark

A beach pedestrian area with a strict 40 km/h limit; access within 3 m of the wreck is prohibited, and wongari are drawn to popular sites.

  4. Seventy hues of sand Rainbow Beach

Rainbow Beach is named for coloured dunes, with more than 70 natural hues formed by minerals and iron oxides. Carlo Sand Blow is an easy 600 m, 10 to 15 minute walk from the car park and a sunrise and sunset spot.

  5. The barge needs no booking Inskip Point

The Inskip Point barge takes no advance booking: you pay on arrival or buy a ticket online, and the crossing takes about 10 minutes.

  6. Whales from the beach June to November

Whales pass off the Rainbow Beach coast from June to November, and Hervey Bay's operators run humpback tours from about July to October.

  7. The 1770 Festival Landing of Lt James Cook

The festival marks the landing of Lt James Cook and the crew of HMB Endeavour at the point now named 1770, and presents Gooreng Gooreng culture. The organising team meets the Gooreng Gooreng each year, and the Gooreng Gooreng have taken part since 1992.

  8. A town named for a lost schooner Agnes Water

Agnes Water is said to be named for the coastal schooner Agnes, lost at sea in 1873, and the Bustard Head lighthouse began operating in June 1868.

Logistics FAQ

Questions People Actually Ask.

Do I need a 4WD?

For K'gari, yes: a high-clearance 4WD with low range, because all-wheel-drive vehicles are not recommended. For Agnes Water and most of Rainbow Beach township a normal car is fine, though beach driving at Rainbow Beach needs a 4WD.

Do I need a permit?

Disclosure & How This Page Works.

Straight talk: Some links on this page are affiliate links — if you book through them, Secrets of Surf Travel earns a small commission at no extra cost to you. We only link places and people we'd use ourselves, and coverage is never for sale. Those commissions are what keep this site running and fund the next trip.

Today, the "Search Vrbo rentals," "Search Booking.com stays," and "Search Agoda stays" links on this page are affiliate links — every vendor listing link is still a plain courtesy link. As partnerships with these local businesses come online, more links (and discount codes, where Secrets of Surf Travel benefits from their use) may earn us a commission, and this page will keep saying so plainly. Coverage is never for sale: nobody on this page paid to be here, and nobody can.

Every listing was researched in 2026 and is being verified in person. Prices, hours, and policies change — treat them as strong starting points and confirm directly with the business. And per the No-Reveal Code: you will find no surf spots on this page, ever.
