Secrets of Surf Travel — The World. The Waves. The Adventure.

Colombo Gateway

Almost every Sri Lanka surf trip starts at Bandaranaike airport, on the west coast, while the waves are on the south and east coasts, hours away by road. This is the logistics page for the first and last night: where to sleep near the airport, where to eat, who drives, how to get to Arugam Bay and the south coast, and the small domestic airline that flies there.

Researched

This gateway page is a first, light version. Every listing is a real local business found on paper and not yet verified in person; prices, hours and details are strong starting points, not gospel.

Logistics

Getting There

Bandaranaike International (CMB) is Sri Lanka’s only major international airport. It sits at Katunayake, about 35 km north of central Colombo and just south of the beach town of Negombo. There is no railway station at the airport.

Reported entry rules (sources disagree and the official site could not be confirmed here): US citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorization before flying, applied for online at eta.gov.lk; one source says the tourist fee was waived for the US from 25 May 2026, another still shows the old fee. The ETA allows up to 30 days, and the passport should have six months of validity. Check eta.gov.lk and the US State Department’s Sri Lanka page before you book.

Logistics

Getting Out of the Airport

  • Prebooked car with driver: the simplest option with boards. Fixed-price transfers from CMB to the south-coast beaches are listed at roughly US$70–100 and to Arugam Bay from roughly US$170 (one booking site’s quote; prices vary by date and operator). Tell the operator about the board bag in advance and confirm the vehicle takes it.
  • Unbooked taxi: reported to charge by the trip and to get caught in morning traffic. Agree the price before you get in.
  • Bus: public bus route 187 runs from outside arrivals to Colombo’s Pettah area for about LKR 200 (reported). Buses do not suit a board bag.
  • Train: take a taxi or bus to Colombo Fort station, then the coastal line south toward Galle and Matara. Book ahead, and check whether the carriage can take a board before you rely on it.
Logistics

The Small Airlines to the Other Hubs

Cinnamon Air is Sri Lanka’s small domestic airline, and its hub is its own Domestic Terminal at Bandaranaike airport. Its website lists Arugam Bay, Ampara (Gal Oya) and Batticaloa among its East Coast destinations, flown in its summer schedule (May to October), and Koggala and Dikwella on the south coast in its winter schedule (November to April). It flies small aircraft and seaplanes with strict baggage limits, so confirm the board policy and the current timetable directly with Cinnamon Air before you build a trip around it.

FitsAir and SriLankan Airlines fly mainly international routes, and we found no confirmed scheduled domestic service on them to the surf coasts.

Getting Out to the Zones

Arugam Bay: about 6 to 8 hours by road; see Arugam Bay Getting There for the bus, train-and-road and private options, and fly Cinnamon Air in the summer season if the schedule suits. The south coast (Galle Fort, Unawatuna, Midigama, Mirissa): about 1.5 to 3 hours by road or by the coastal train; see Sri Lanka South Coast Getting There, and Cinnamon Air flies to Koggala and Dikwella in the winter season.

Logistics FAQ

Questions People Actually Ask.

Do I need a visa for Sri Lanka?

Most US travelers apply online for an Electronic Travel Authorization before they fly, at eta.gov.lk. Sources disagree on the current fee, so check the official site and the US State Department before you book.

How far is Arugam Bay from Colombo airport?

About 6 to 8 hours by road. Route planners show roughly 390 to 420 km by the south-coast expressway, and local operators warn that traffic makes it longer, so plan on a full day.

Is there a train from the airport?

No. Bandaranaike airport has no railway station, so public transport means a bus or taxi to Colombo Fort or Negombo first, then the coastal train south.

Can I fly instead of driving to the east or south coast?

Cinnamon Air, a small domestic airline whose hub is the Domestic Terminal at Bandaranaike airport, lists Arugam Bay, Ampara (Gal Oya) and Batticaloa among its East Coast destinations, flown in its May to October summer season, and Koggala and Dikwella on the south coast in its November to April winter season. Check its current schedule and board policy before you build a trip around it.
