Cardiff Gateway
A South Wales trip starts in Cardiff, even though the Wales zone map does not show it: the airport has no direct US flights, but the city is on the fast train from London and a short drive from the first Wales hubs. This is the logistics page for the arrival night: where to sleep, where to eat, who drives, which flights, trains and roads reach the other gateways, and where to find a board shop.
Getting There
Cardiff Airport (CWL) is the local airport for the South Wales hubs of the Wales zone, about 20 km south-west of the city centre, with mostly European leisure routes and no direct US service (reported on the Wales page). Cardiff is not a surf town; it is the logistics base where a South Wales trip starts, with fast trains to London and a few buses to the coast.
Wales is part of the United Kingdom: US citizens get a visa-free six-month stay but need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travel, currently GBP 20, and EU passports need it too. Details are in the Wales Visa & Documents section.
Getting Out of the Airport
- Bus: a regular TrawsCymru T9 and the X91 reportedly run to Cardiff city centre, with a fare of roughly GBP 3 in one older guide. Check the current operator and ask about a board bag.
- Train: there is no rail link at the terminal; a shuttle (#905, reported about GBP 1) runs to Rhoose station for the train to Cardiff. Confirm the timetable.
- Taxi: taxis queue at the terminal; ask for an estate or a minivan for a board bag.
- Rental car or campervan: the practical option for the coast. Drive on the left, and note that most hire cars are manual.
Flights, Trains and Roads to the Other Gateways
- Airlines at Cardiff: TUI is reported as the largest carrier and Ryanair as running about five summer routes in 2026 (including Dublin, Faro, Alicante and Tenerife). We found no scheduled US service.
- Anglesey: a publicly subsidised Cardiff to Anglesey air link has run on and off, flown by small operators (reported); we could not confirm a current operator or timetable. By road or rail it is about four hours.
- West Wales (Tenby, Pembroke): the Pembroke Dock rail line calls at Tenby; a Cardiff to Haverfordwest journey is reported at about two and a half hours with a change, and a Tenby to Haverfordwest bus around an hour. Confirm timetables on National Rail.
- North Wales: direct trains from Cardiff to Bangor are reported at about four hours; Manchester Airport is the stronger gateway for the Llŷn Peninsula, per the Wales page.

Getting Out to the Zones
Wales: see Wales Getting There. South Wales (the Porthcawl side) is about an hour by road from Cardiff; West Wales and North Wales are separate, longer trips.
Questions People Actually Ask.
Which airport do I fly into for the Wales zone?
It depends on the hub. Cardiff is the local airport for South Wales but has no direct US service; Bristol has none either. Manchester is the stronger choice for the Llŷn Peninsula, and London is the fallback US gateway for any hub, per the Wales page.
How far is Cardiff Airport from the city?
About 20 km south-west of the centre. Buses are reported at about 70 minutes on some timetables, and there is no rail link at the terminal; a shuttle runs to Rhoose station. A taxi is the quickest option.
Can I fly from Cardiff to Anglesey?
A subsidised Cardiff to Anglesey link has existed, but we could not confirm a current operator, so check the Welsh Government and the airline before you plan around it.
Is there one coherent Wales loop?
No. The Wales page says plainly that South Wales and North Wales are two separate trips, roughly 170 to 190 miles apart with no direct coastal route.
Where do I stay near the airport?
Chain hotels sit beside the terminal; the independents on this page are bed and breakfasts and guesthouses in Rhoose, Penmark and Barry.
