Getting There
A limited direct US flight exists, but it's new and thin. Cabo Verde Airlines restored Providence, RI (PVD) to Sal (SID) service in May 2026 — the first direct US route since 2021, currently running a couple of flights a week via Praia. Worth checking the current schedule before counting on it, since routes this thin can be cut. The far more established routing is via Lisbon: TAP Air Portugal flies Lisbon to both Sal and Boa Vista, and Cape Verde's real European package-tourism infrastructure (TUI, easyJet, and other charter carriers) also serves both islands directly from the UK and mainland Europe — useful context even though it doesn't help the transatlantic leg.
Documents: US citizens are visa-exempt for stays up to 30 days, but must complete Cape Verde's EASE (Electronic Travel Authorization) online before arrival — this isn't optional despite the visa exemption. Apply at least 5 days ahead; most approvals land within 5 business days. It includes payment of a small airport security fee through the same platform. Passport should be valid 6+ months beyond your trip.
Ground Transport
- Sal Airport to Santa Maria: about 17km, roughly 20-30 minutes by car. Taxi pricing varies a lot by source and transfer type — budget somewhere in the €25-70 range and confirm the fare before getting in.
- Getting between the islands is not a simple daily shuttle — worth planning ahead rather than assuming routine hopping. Inter-island flights exist, but the carrier landscape has shifted in recent years (several smaller European and regional operators now cover routes that a single domestic carrier used to run) — confirm the current operator and schedule close to your trip. A twice-weekly ferry also connects the islands: Sal-Boa Vista runs about 3 hours, while São Vicente-Sal is a longer haul at roughly 10 hours.
- On Boa Vista, a 4x4 is genuinely useful for reaching unpaved areas like the desert dunes — standard rental cars work fine in and around Sal Rei and Santa Maria themselves.
When to Go & What to Pack
- Mild water most of the year — roughly 22-24°C December through February, rising to 25-28°C by early autumn. Boardshorts work for most of the year; a light spring suit is worth having for the coolest winter stretch, though not essential for most surfers.
- Peak surf season runs November through March, driven by consistent NW winter swells. A secondary, less consistent south-swell season runs roughly June-September, but comes with stronger wind.
- Sal and Boa Vista are also real wind destinations — kitesurf and windsurf schools are a major part of both islands' tourism infrastructure, not an afterthought. Pack for wind even if surfing is the main goal.
Good to Know
- The advisory: Cape Verde sits at Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions — one of the calmest ratings anywhere in this site's Africa build-out. A localized increase in petty and violent crime has been noted specifically in Praia, the capital on Santiago island — a different island from Sal, Boa Vista, or São Vicente, with no bearing on this zone.
- Malaria is essentially a non-issue here — a genuine positive standout for this site's Africa zones. The WHO certified Cape Verde malaria-free in January 2024, and Sal specifically has never had the malaria vector present at all. Worth one honest footnote: a small, currently-active local outbreak has reappeared in Praia (Santiago) as of 2025 — again, a different island entirely from the three covered on this page.

- Currency: Cape Verdean Escudo (CVE), pegged to the euro at a fixed rate.
Sal — Santa Maria & Ponta Preta
Cape Verde's established package-tourism and surf hub — a real resort cluster along the beachfront, a genuine multi-school surf and kite scene, and the most predictable ground game of the three islands on this page.
