Bogotá Gateway
Both hubs of the Colombia zone start at Bogotá, even though the zone map does not show it: the Pacific coast is reached by small plane or boat, not by road. This is the logistics page for the connection: where to sleep, where to eat, who drives, how the flights and boats reach the zone, and what to ask before you pack a board bag.
Getting There
Bogotá (BOG) is Colombia's international gateway for the Pacific-coast Colombia zone, and from there the zone splits into two separate itineraries (reported on the zone page). For Nuquí and Guachalito, fly Bogotá to Medellín (Olaya Herrera, the small downtown airport) or Quibdó, then a short regional flight on Satena or Pacífica de Aviación into Nuquí's Reyes Murillo Airport (NQU); no road connects Nuquí to the rest of Colombia. For Juanchaco and Ladrilleros, fly Bogotá to Cali, travel to the port city of Buenaventura, then take a fast boat of about one hour (Transporte Asturias is the named operator; the return fare is around 90,000 COP, valid 15 days).
US citizens need no visa for up to 90 days; sources disagree on how the cap totals across repeat trips in a year (reported on the zone page). Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry to Colombia generally and specifically recommended for this coast. Rules move, so check the official source. Details are in the Colombia Getting There section.
Getting Out of the Airport
- Pre-booked transfer: arrange a shuttle or private transfer from El Dorado; avoid unmarked taxis and agree the fare.
- Domestic connection: Bogotá to Medellín (Olaya Herrera) or Quibdó, then Satena or Pacífica de Aviación to Nuquí (reported on the zone page); ask each airline about board bags and weight limits, as small planes are strict.
- Boat leg: Cali to Buenaventura, then a fast boat to Juanchaco (reported on the zone page); confirm times and board-bag handling.
Routes to the Two Hubs
- Nuquí and Guachalito: via Medellín Olaya Herrera or Quibdó, then a small plane into Nuquí (NQU); there is no road connection (reported on the zone page).
- Juanchaco and Ladrilleros: via Cali and Buenaventura, then a fast boat of about one hour (reported on the zone page).
- Small airlines: Satena and Pacífica de Aviación operate the Nuquí flights (reported on the zone page).
