Secrets of Surf Travel — The World. The Waves. The Adventure.

Auckland Gateway

The Northland & Auckland zone starts at Auckland Airport (AKL), at the bottom right of the zone map. This is the logistics page for the connection: where to sleep, where to eat, who drives, how the roads reach Piha, Muriwai and the Far North, and where to find a surf shop.

Researched

This gateway page is a first, light version. Every listing is a real local business found on paper and not yet verified in person; prices, hours and details are strong starting points, not gospel.

Logistics

Getting There

Auckland Airport (AKL) is the gateway for the Northland & Auckland zone. Air New Zealand flies direct from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston and Honolulu, more direct US routes than any other carrier on this corridor, and the flight from Los Angeles takes roughly 12 hours (reported on the zone page).

US citizens need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before travel, applied for online or by app. It is not optional. The zone page puts the 2026 cost at roughly NZD 117-123 including the NZD 100 visitor levy, valid for 2 years or until passport expiry and up to 90 days per visit (reported). Rules depend on your passport, so check the official source before you book.

Logistics

Getting Out of the Airport

  • Piha and Muriwai: each about 40-45 minutes from central Auckland and about 25 minutes from each other, so they work as a day trip (reported on the zone page).
  • Ahipara: a long drive north of Auckland, via Kaitaia, the nearest real service town (reported on the zone page); allow a full travel day.
  • Rental car: Auckland Airport is the real rental hub for the whole zone, and neither Ahipara nor Piha and Muriwai has its own rental desk (reported).
  • Board and wetsuit repair: do it in Auckland before or after the Far North leg (reported).
Logistics

Other Gateways for This Zone

  • Auckland (AKL): the gateway for both hubs in the zone (this page).
  • Bay of Islands (Paihia): about 1.5-2 hours from Ahipara, and not walkable or local to it (reported on the zone page); there is no separate airport gateway on the zone map.

For the full route notes, see the Northland & Auckland Getting There section.
