Amsterdam Gateway
The Netherlands zone starts at Schiphol, even though the map does not show it: one of Europe’s best-connected airports, with trains straight to both hubs. This is the logistics page for the arrival night: where to sleep, where to eat, who drives, how the trains and taxis work, and where to find a surf shop.
Getting There
Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) is one of the best-connected airports in Europe, about 15 km south-west of central Amsterdam, with nonstop flights from most major US cities on KLM, Delta, United and JetBlue (reported on the Netherlands page). Amsterdam is not a surf town; it is the logistics base for the Netherlands zone, where trains reach both the Zandvoort and Scheveningen hubs without a car.
The Netherlands is a full EU and Schengen member: no visa for 90 days within any 180 for most Western passports, with the passport valid at least three months beyond departure and issued within the prior ten years. See the Netherlands Getting There section.
Getting Out of the Airport
- Train: NS trains run from the airport station to Amsterdam Centraal in about 17 to 20 minutes, reported at around EUR 5 to 6 a single, several times an hour with a reduced overnight service. Pay with a contactless card at the yellow posts or a machine ticket; confirm live fares in the NS app.
- Direct to the coast: trains also run from the airport station toward The Hague, the Scheveningen side; the Netherlands page covers the onward legs for each hub.
- Taxi: a fixed-fare taxi is the easy option with a board bag; ask for an estate or a van.
- Board on the train: we could not confirm NS rules for a full-size board; ask at the station before you board in rush hour.
Trains, Buses and Flights to the Other Hubs
- Zandvoort: reached by train from Amsterdam, usually via Haarlem; see the Netherlands page for times.
- Scheveningen: reached by train to The Hague and a short tram or bus; Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTM) is closer but has no meaningful US service.
- Small planes: we found no small-airline links between Dutch airports worth planning around; trains are the practical connection.
For zone-by-zone logistics, see the Netherlands Getting There section.
